How do I install replacement windows without any background knowledge?Replacing windows yourself can be a really tricky affair. The jargon involved is enough to put most people off doing the job and leaving it to a trained professional. But in case you are a strong headed person who is bent on replacing the windows yourself, maybe you can do with a little help here. Before installing replacement windows, you must first have the correct size and type of window. To obtain the correct size, measure the dimensions from jamb to jamb and from sill to head jamb. Take readings from at least three places. Always take the smallest reading if there is inconsistency. Usually, single and double-hung windows are installed by DIY. You have to remove the sash first before you can install your new replacement windows. To do so, you have to remove stops that are holding the sash in place. There are three sets of stops—inside, blind, outside. Only the inside and blinds stops can be removed to dismantle the upper and lower sash. Do this carefully. Once the above step is done, you are ready to install the replacement windows. Center the window and screw it into place. Put back the inside stop and you are almost done already. Check if there are empty gaps. In the event that your window is too small, you may need to fill up the holes with wood strips. Nail the wood strips into place and then refit your replacement windows into the designated position. Once everything is done, caulking is the final step. This is done to
ensure there are no gaps for water to leak in and damage the windows.
If at any point you are stuck, it will be best to call a contractor to
do the job. Having spent so much on windows, it really isn’t worth
it to damage it. Or else, buy a video and watch for step by step instructions. |
